The 2019CAFPS Summer Event “Finance hot topics discussion” was held in Zurich, Switzerland on a beautiful summer afternoon on the 1st of June. We invited three experts from different fields to share their experiences. More than 20 members from various educational and professional backgrounds participated in the discussion in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

This event was opened with a short yet warm welcome speech by the president of the CAFPS, Dr. ZuxiangDai.  He was also the first speaker on the topic of Innovation in Finance.

Dr. Zuxiang Dai detailed what innovation means and the two dimensions of Innovation in Finance which lead to the four types: Incremental sustaining, Disruptive, Breakthrough and Research.  In a well-structured and easy-to-understand speech, he offered the audience his insights in the current innovation trends which includes the Blockchain, Bitcoin, etc. These innovations transform Finance and payment systems from a centralized system to a decentralized one. One quote that particularly resonated with the audience was “if small businesses could be financed cheaper and with more flexibility by the new technology, this would greatly help innovation”. Participants showed great interest and raised many questions throughout and after the presentation.

Ms. Sally J. Yan, the executive board member of Drivetide Capital AG and also the Founder of China-Europe Enterprise platform entry square, was the second speaker. She started by introducing herself and how she has founded her company a decade ago. Now her company has become the most successful market leader in the field of matchmaking China-European companies. She discussed the barriers of doing business between China and Europe. Firstly, European companies which are interested in doing business in China should understand the Chinese market and get better informed before entering. Secondly, the ways of communication between the two are so different, not only about language but more on the way of thinking. She gave an example of how executives would respond differently with regard to scheduling. When a Chinese executive knows that a foreign executive is coming to visit, he/she would not give a time slot for the meeting but would say, let’s see how it goes on that day (showing flexibility). On the other hand, if a European executive is in the same situation, he/she would offer the first time slots available on his/her schedule to show interest and respect.

Her company developed a database that captures tens of thousands of companies behavior and uses data analysis to match Chinese and European companies that can be successful future business partners. This topic turned out to capture the imagination of many of the participants and triggered interesting, even heated but constructive discussions.

AfterMs Sally J. Yan’s presentation, the executive board of CAFPS has prepared a surprise birthday cake for one of the board members: Ms. Pinzhao Wang’sbirthday, by chance, fell on the very same day. Happy Birthday, Pinzhao!!

The third speaker was Ms. Aiping Gao, who is an entrepreneur and investor. She works as a consultant of Asian investment for several family offices. She focusses on investigating, screening and evaluating investment opportunities in areas such as AI, Smart Manufacture, IOT (internet of things)and new consumption.

She gave an inspirational speech and analyzed the reasons why China is the most successful country out of the BRIC countries. BRIC is a grouping acronym that refers to the countries of Brazil, Russia, India, and China, which are all deemed to be at a similar stage of newly advanced economic development. This phrase was first coined by Jim O’Neil in 2001, and how 18 years have passed, China is no doubt the most successful in economic development. The main reason, as pointed out by MsAiping Gao, is the fact that the Chinese government has put in resources in an education system that enabled millions of students becoming engineers. The current success of China is largely due to the large educated talent pool that resulted from these investments.

After the warm applauses given for the guest speakers and the organizers, participants enjoyed coffee and tea while getting to know each other better and discussing future cooperation.
